Highlights: Charles County Observes Juneteenth as a holiday with a Proclamation

On Saturday, June 18th Charles County celebrated Juneteenth at Shops at Waldorf Center in Waldorf MD. Juneteenth is officially observed on June 20 this year, but festivities were held throughout the weekend. Saturday’s Juneteenth Freedom Day at Shops at Waldorf Center, presented by the Charles county Juneteenth Committee, incorporates elected officials, dance, poetry, live music, and African drumming.

Juneteenth was brought to our community two decades ago by Bonita Adeeb and with that effort, Charles county will continue to celebrate Juneteenth within our community with an official proclamation read by commissioner President Reuben Collins to kick off the event. This came right after President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, declaring June 19 a federal holiday.
